Dorey Family of Susan J. Dorey: George Dorey

My Doreys originated in Jersey, an island in the English Channel; the earliest known are from 1690. They moved to Arichat on Isle Madame in the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia in the early 1800s.

This page addresses the family of George Dorey, sixth child of Philippe Dorey who was born 1753 in Jersey. George immigrated to Nova Scotia with his parents and siblings. There he married two wives and had five children.

Most of this family is buried in West Arichat, Isle Madame, Richmond Co., Nova Scotia at the Immaculate Conception Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (sometimes abbreviated ICC).

On 2-5-2007 I revised this page to show that Henry John Dorey is a separate person from his brother Clément Honoré. I am finally persuaded they are two.

"John Janvrin was granted a tract of land on Janvrin's Island under the governorship of William MacCormick. The tract of land Janvrin owned was comprised of 1000 or 1500 acres. He set up a fishing post in Janvrin's Harbour and stayed for a while before returning to Arichat. Through the years he sold or rented to fishermen various small properties on the island. The government of Nova Scotia repossessed it around 1894. A story is told that when John Janvrin left Janvrin's Island he made George Dorey promise to call the harbour Janvrin's Harbour after him." (From janvrinsisland.ca/history/)

This page lists the first three generations. There is additional information:

The Indian Connection

The second wife of George Dorey, Charlotte Bellefontaine Petitpas, was a descendant of the daughter of a Mi'kmaq woman and an early Acadian French settler, Jehan Lambert. The daughter was called Radégonde Lambert. Charlotte was a seventh-generation descendant of Radégonde.

Joseph Petitpas was a son of Claude Petitpas (1663–1731) and Françoise Lavergne (his second wife, she was born 1703, they married 1-7-1721 in Port Toulouse, now called St. Peter's, on Cape Breton Island). He had brothers Jean-Baptiste (b. abt. 1722) and Louis Benjamin (b. 1726). Joseph's father Claude Petitpas was born at Port-Royal in 1663, the third child of Claude Petitpas Sr. and Catherine Bugaret. Claude Petitpas Sr. was born in France in 1626 and arrived in Acadia about 1640. He married Catherine in 1658 in Port-Royal. Claude Sr. became clerk of court at Port-Royal (now Annapolis Royal), for his services to the government he was given the title Sieur De LaFleur.
Joseph and Jean-Baptiste colonized Chezzetcook and became the ancestors and progenitors of the Petitpas of that place.

Charlotte was a widow when she married George.

An Alexander Petitpas died 6-14-1869, age 91, and was buried in St. Peter's, Tracadie; the note is that he was born Chezzetcook and was probably the child of Joseph Petitpas and Marguerite Breau–making him an uncle of Charlotte's.

bap. 11-30-1848 St. John's Anglican Church, Arichat, NS as DORY
d. unknown

There is much confusion between Henry John and his brother Clément Honoré. It is unlikely to be resolved because of the lack of records. But, as of Feb. 2007, my theory is that he died young, perhaps before his brother was born. And that it was his brother who married Adele Landry. Please advise of any evidence to the contrary!
