Smith Family of Susan J. Dorey

My Smiths lived in Truro, MA in the 1700s. The first I know of are John and Hannah Smith. They had at least four children, two grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. In 1908 a Smith brother and sister married a Bryne sister and brother.

Truro is on Cape Cod, a peninsula of Massachusetts in the Atlantic Ocean. Truro is located near the end of the Cape between Provincetown and Wellfleet.

There were many Smiths in Truro in this time frame. I believe the earliest were among the Pilgrim settlers. I will appreciate any information on the ancestors of John and Hannah you can provide.

History

There were Smiths in Truro from the earliest times.

Massachusetts, as with the rest of North America, had a native population when the first Europeans appeared. Ironically European settlers in search of religious freedom did not always extend the same benefit to the natives they encountered.

Massachusetts was settled by Europeans fleeing the Church of England, including Separatists and Puritans, in the 1600s, largely by two charted English companies. The first group was the Plymouth Colony. Captain Myles Standish was the commanding military officer and John Carver was elected governor. The second group was the Massachusetts Bay Colony whose elected governor was John Winthrop. Plymouth Colony and the Massachusetts Bay Colony were combined when a new charter was put into place in 1691–1692, creating the Province of Massachusetts. In 1642 King Charles I effectively shut off emigration to the colonies, which did not resume until after the Revolution.

Plymouth Colony

The Mayflower transported 102 passengers, principally English Separatists better known as the Pilgrims, from Southampton, England, bound for Jamestown Settlement, Virginia, in 1620. They never reached Jamestown. Instead on November 11 they landed in what is now Provincetown Harbor, MA. After irritating the locals they moved down the coast to what is now Eastham. On November 17 they dropped anchor in Plymouth Harbor and the next month landed at what would become the town of Plymouth.

The Plymouth Colony, a legal British colony, existed from 1620 to 1691. The capitol town of Plymouth is on the mainland south of Boston. Towns on Cape Cod were Eastham, Yarmouth, Barnstable, Falmouth, and Sandwich. Eastham was founded in 1646, Barnstable in 1650, Yarmouth in 1639.

The second ship, the Fortune, arrived in November 1621 with 37 settlers. In July 1623, two more ships arrived, carrying 90 new settlers. Ships continued to bring settlers, and by January 1630 the colony had almost 300 people.

Of the Pilgrim settlers in America (including Virginia and MA), 70 were Smiths, none arrived on the Mayflower.

Massachusetts Bay Colony

Governor John Winthrop's fleet landed in Salem, Massachusetts in 1630, with the first mass exodus of Puritans from England. There were 1,000 settlers in that first group. Two hundred died that winter and two hundred more returned to England the following spring. But, in the next ten years, 20,000 persons, most from England and most of the Puritan philosophy, immigrated to Massachusetts to form the backbone of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Truro

The area of Truro was first visited by Europeans when the Mayflower anchored in Provincetown Harbor. It was not revisited until after Eastham was settled at which time parts of it were called Nauset and later Pamet. Eastham bordered on Truro. "As early as 1689 these proprietors purchased as much of the territory of Truro as the Indians would sell, and from the first these proprietors of Eastham resolved to control the sale of its lands, as was declared in a meeting of these men, at which Thomas Paine was made an agent to purchase of the Indians from time to time all the lands obtainable." (History of Plymouth County, MA with Biographical Sketches Compiled by Simeon D. Hamilton Hurd, 1884.) Before 1689 some individuals bought land from the Indians, including Thomas Smith in 1644.

Among the residents when the town was incorporated were Thomas Paine, senior and junior, Moses Paine, Jonathan Paine, Ebenezer Smith, and Thomas Smith.

"The descendants of the early proprietors still occupy similar positions in the affairs of the town [1884], and in part, the same estates of those sterling ancestors. In 1800 there were twenty-six families of the name of Rich, fifteen of Lombard, fifteen of Snow, ten of Paine, and ten of Dyer."
